Channels & Categories

Channels are the individual spaces where conversations happen inside a room. Categories organize them. Here’s everything you need to know.

Types of Channels

# Text Channels

For written conversations. Messages, images, files, GIFs, everything text-based happens here. These are the most common channel type.

🔊 Voice Channels

Real-time audio (and optionally video) hangout spaces. You join them like a room, others can see you’re in there and join too.

📢 Announcement Channels

Like text channels, but one-directional. Only admins can post; everyone else can read and react. Used for important room updates.

Categories: The Filing System

Categories are folders that group related channels together. They have a title (usually in ALL CAPS by convention) and can be collapsed or expanded. A well-organized room might look like:
📁 START HERE
  📌 #rules
  📢 #announcements

📁 GENERAL
  # general
  # off-topic
  # media

📁 GAMING
  # lfg (looking for group)
  # game-clips
  🔊 Gaming Lounge
  🔊 Squad Room

📁 COMMUNITY
  # introductions
  # suggestions
You don’t need a category for every channel, but grouping channels logically makes navigation much easier, especially as a room grows.

Creating Channels (Room Admins)

1

Hover over the category where you want the channel

A small + icon appears to the right of the category name.
2

Click the + icon

Choose Text Channel or Voice Channel.
3

Name the channel

Text channel names are lowercase with hyphens: #game-night, #movie-recs. Voice channels can use any style: 🎮 Gaming Lounge.
4

Confirm

The channel appears immediately at the bottom of that category.
To create a channel outside any category, right-click in the empty space of the channel list.

Creating Categories (Room Admins)

Similar to creating channels:
  1. Right-click in the channel list → Create Category
  2. Name it
  3. Drag channels into the new category by clicking and dragging their names

Reordering Channels & Categories

Channels and categories can be freely reordered by drag and drop. Grab a channel name and drag it to the position you want. You can move channels between categories the same way.
Reordering is only available to Admins and the Owner.

Voice Channels: How They Work

Voice channels are always “open”, they’re just empty until someone joins. When someone’s in a voice channel, you’ll see their name and avatar listed under the channel name. To join a voice channel: Click its name. You’ll instantly join the call.
To leave: Click the disconnect button at the bottom of the screen (or in the active call bar).
Inside a voice channel you can:
  • Talk (your microphone is live by default, mute if needed)
  • Enable your camera
  • Share your screen
  • See who else is in the call
For a full guide to voice calls, see the Voice & Video section.

Channel Notifications

By default, you’re notified about all messages in channels you’re a member of. You can customize this per-channel:
  1. Right-click a channel → Notification Settings
  2. Choose: All Messages, Only @Mentions, or Nothing
For busy channels you’re not super active in, setting notifications to “Only @Mentions” keeps things manageable.

Pinned Messages in Channels

Each channel has a collection of pinned messages, important posts that shouldn’t get lost in the scroll. Room admins and moderators can pin messages. To view pinned messages: click the 📌 pin icon in the channel header.

Archiving vs. Deleting Channels

Currently, channels can be deleted by admins (this removes all messages permanently) but not archived. If you want to preserve a channel’s content, consider making it read-only (for members) rather than deleting it.
Deleting a channel permanently removes all of its message history. This can’t be undone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Channels can be restricted to certain roles. If a channel exists but you can’t access it, it’s likely for members with an elevated role. Ask an admin if you should have access.
There’s no hard limit, but practically speaking, rooms with too many channels become hard to navigate. Start small and grow as needed.
Technically yes, channel names are identified by their internal ID, not just their name. But it’s confusing for members, so it’s best avoided.
No. Only Admins and the Owner can create channels.
