Profile Visibility

Your profile is your public identity on Tavrn. But “public” doesn’t have to mean visible to absolutely everyone. Here’s how to tune it.

The Profile Visibility Setting

Go to Settings → Privacy & Safety → Profile to choose one of three levels:

🌍 Everyone

Your full profile is visible to everyone on Tavrn, friends, strangers, anyone who looks you up. This includes:
  • Your display name, username, and avatar
  • Your bio and pronouns
  • Your banner color
  • Your Steam connection (if connected)
  • Your Cocoa badge (if you have one)
  • Mutual friends and rooms (for people who share them with you)

👥 Friends Only

Only people on your friends list can see your full profile details. To everyone else, your profile shows a limited view, typically just your name and avatar.

🔒 Only Me

Your profile details are hidden from everyone, including people who aren’t your friends. Only the bare minimum (display name, avatar) is visible when you show up in rooms or conversations.

What’s Always Visible, Regardless of Setting

Even on Only Me, a few things are always visible:
  • Your display name, People need to know who they’re talking to in rooms
  • Your avatar, Shows up next to your messages
  • Your username, Used for @mentions
These can’t be hidden because hiding them would break basic functionality.

Profile Visibility vs. Other Privacy Settings

Profile visibility is just one piece. It works together with other settings:
SettingWhat it controls
Profile VisibilityWho can see your bio, social links, etc.
Friend List VisibilityWho can see your friends list specifically
Presence / StatusWho can see your online status dot
Search VisibilityWhether you appear in search results
These are all configured separately in Settings → Privacy & Safety, and they compound. For example, you could have a public profile but hide your friends list, or have a private profile but still be searchable by username.

The Friends-Only Sweet Spot

For most people, Friends Only hits the right balance:
  • People you’ve connected with see the full picture
  • Strangers see just enough to decide if they want to send a friend request
  • Your personal details (bio, social links, location) aren’t exposed to everyone
If you’re a creator or community figure who wants to be discoverable, Everyone makes more sense. If you just want privacy from everyone who isn’t explicitly your friend, Only Me is there for you.

How Profile Visibility Interacts with Rooms

When you’re a member of a public room, people in that room can see your name and avatar in the member list regardless of your profile visibility setting. Your profile details (bio, social links) remain gated by your privacy setting, just your presence in the room is visible.

Mutual Content

When two people share mutual friends or rooms, those connections are shown on each other’s profiles, but only to the extent each person’s privacy settings allow. If your profile is set to Only Me, mutual friends/rooms won’t be shown on your profile when someone else views it.
