Reactions & Emoji

Tavrn takes emoji seriously. Whether you’re reacting to a message or dropping a well-timed 💀 in the chat, here’s how it all works.

Reacting to Messages

Reactions let you respond to a message without sending a whole reply. They’re great for quick acknowledgment, agreement, or just vibe-confirming that you’re reading. To add a reaction:
  1. Hover over any message (on desktop) or long-press it (on mobile)
  2. Click the 😊 emoji icon that appears
  3. Pick your emoji from the picker
  4. Your reaction appears below the message
Reactions are stackable, if five people all react with 🔥, the message shows 🔥 5. Multiple emoji can all exist on the same message at once.

Reacting with a Recent Emoji

The reaction picker shows your most recently used emoji at the top for quick access. If you’re a creature of habit (👍 on everything, no judgment), this makes repeat-reacting very fast.

Removing a Reaction

Changed your mind? Click your existing reaction again to remove it. It’s a toggle.

Viewing Who Reacted

Hover over a reaction count to see a list of who added that reaction. Useful for when you need to know exactly which four people think something is 💀.

The Emoji Picker

The full emoji picker is available everywhere you can type, DMs, room channels, the reaction picker. Click the 😊 button in the message toolbar to open it. Inside the picker you’ll find:
  • All standard emoji organized by category (people, nature, food, travel, objects, symbols, flags…)
  • Recently used, quick access to your go-tos
  • Search, type any keyword to find exactly what you’re looking for
  • Skin tone selector, set a default skin tone for applicable emoji
You can also type emoji codes directly in your message using :emoji_name: syntax. For example, → 👋. Start typing : followed by a keyword and an autocomplete menu will appear.

Emoji Rendering on Tavrn

Tavrn renders emoji using Twemoji, Twitter’s open-source emoji set. This means emoji look consistent across all devices, regardless of what your operating system normally renders. This is actually a big deal! Emoji can look radically different (and sometimes confusing) between iOS, Android, and Windows. Twemoji keeps everyone on the same page.

GIFs vs. Emoji

Both GIFs and emoji are ways to express yourself, but they serve different purposes:

Tips for Reaction Culture

A few informal community norms around reactions that tend to make conversations feel good:
  • React to things you enjoy, it costs nothing and makes the sender feel heard
  • Don’t over-react, plastering 50 reactions on every message gets visually noisy
  • Use reactions instead of “haha” or “ok”, keeps the chat cleaner and quieter
  • Reactions aren’t endorsements, a 😂 reaction just means something made you laugh, not that you agree with everything said
Reactions are visible to everyone in the conversation or channel. In DMs, only you and the other person can see them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Currently, Tavrn uses the standard Twemoji set. Custom room emoji aren’t yet a feature, but it’s something people have asked for!
Yes, hover over any reaction to see who added it. You can also scroll through all reactions if there are many on a popular message.
No hard limit. In theory, every emoji in existence could be on a single message. In practice, that would be a lot.
You can’t disable reactions on messages sent to you (it’s part of the core experience), but you can choose not to react to others’ messages yourself.
