What is a Room?

If you’re new to platforms like Tavrn (or Discord, for that matter), the term “room” might seem weird. Nothing to worry about, it’s simpler than it sounds.

The Short Version

A room is a dedicated community space. It has a name, an icon, its own channels, and its own members. Think of it like a clubhouse, each room is its own little world that exists within Tavrn. You can be a member of many rooms simultaneously. Switch between them by clicking their icons in your left sidebar.

What’s Inside a Room

Every room contains:

💬 Text Channels

For written conversations. Each channel typically has a specific topic, like #general, #gaming, or #memes.

🔊 Voice Channels

Hang out and talk in real-time. You can see who’s currently in a voice channel before you join.

👥 Members

All the people who have joined the room. Each member has a role that determines what they can do.

⚙️ Settings

Room-level settings, name, icon, description, invite links, moderation, and more. Managed by the owner and admins.

Channels, Categories, and Organization

Channels are organized into categories, collapsible groups that cluster related channels together. For example, a gaming room might look like this:
📁 WELCOME & INFO
  📌 #rules
  📢 #announcements

📁 GENERAL
  # general-chat
  # off-topic
  # memes

📁 GAMING
  # fortnite
  # minecraft
  # looking-for-group
  🔊 Gaming Voice 1
  🔊 Gaming Voice 2

📁 CHILL ZONE
  # music-chat
  🔊 Chill Lounge
Channels with a # are text channels. Channels with a 🔊 are voice channels.
On Tavrn, channel categories are collapsible, you can hide categories you don’t use much to keep the sidebar clean.

Roles & Hierarchy

Everyone in a room has a role that defines their permissions. The default roles from most to least powerful are:
  1. Owner, Full control. The person who created the room.
  2. Admin, Almost full control. Can manage channels, members, and settings.
  3. Moderator, Can moderate members and content.
  4. Member, The default role. Can read and send messages, join voice channels.
Rooms can customize these roles and add additional ones.
For a full deep-dive on roles and permissions, see Roles & Permissions.

Public vs. Private Rooms

Public rooms are discoverable, they can appear in Tavrn’s room discovery and be joined by anyone with a link. Private rooms only accept members via invite link. They don’t show up in search or discovery. Most friend-group rooms are private. Large communities are usually public.

How Big Can a Room Get?

There’s no published hard cap on room size. Tavrn is built to scale, and the underlying infrastructure uses proper real-time technology to handle large communities.
