Online Status & Presence

Your status indicator is the little colored dot next to your avatar. It tells your friends and room members whether you’re around and what kind of mood you’re in.

The Three Status States

🟢 Online

You’re here and actively using Tavrn. Full notifications are delivered. Friends can see you’re around.

🟡 Away / Idle

You’re logged in but not actively using the app. Can be set automatically after a period of inactivity, or switched to manually.

🔴 Busy (Do Not Disturb)

You’re online but prefer not to be interrupted. Audio notification alerts are suppressed. DMs and messages still come through, you just won’t be pinged.
Want to appear offline to everyone even while you’re active? That’s done through your Privacy Settings, not through the status menu. Set Settings → Privacy & Safety → Online Status → Nobody and you’ll appear offline to all other users regardless of your activity.

Setting Your Status

  1. Click the status dot next to your avatar in the bottom of the sidebar
  2. Select Online, Away, or Busy from the menu
  3. It updates instantly

Automatic Status Changes

Tavrn can automatically update your status based on activity:
  • Online → Away/Idle, After a period of inactivity (no keyboard/mouse activity), Tavrn may set you to Away automatically
  • Away → Online, When you come back and start interacting, status resets to Online
You can always override this by manually setting your status.

Custom Status Messages

On top of the preset statuses, you can set a custom status message, a short text (with emoji!) that shows up on your profile and in friend lists. Examples:
  • 🎮 Gaming
  • 📚 Studying, slow replies
  • 🌙 Night owl hours
  • 🎧 In the zone
  • ✈️ Traveling
Set a custom status by clicking your status dot → Set Custom Status.
Cocoa members get an enhanced custom status with more display options. Learn about Cocoa →

Presence Privacy

You control who can see your presence status. Go to Settings → Privacy & Safety → Online Status:
  • Everyone, All Tavrn users can see your status dot
  • Friends Only, Only your friends can see your status dot
  • Nobody, Your status is hidden from everyone (you always appear offline to others, even if you’re actively online)
If you set presence to “Nobody,” you’ll appear offline to everyone, even close friends. Consider “Friends Only” if you want privacy from strangers but not from people you know.

Status in Friend Lists

In your friends list, your friends are sorted by their status, online friends appear at the top, offline at the bottom. This makes it easy to see at a glance who’s around to chat. Friends’ status dots are visible everywhere you see their avatar, in the friends list, in room member lists, in the DM sidebar.

Status in Room Member Lists

When you open a room, the member list on the right shows all members grouped by status:
  1. Online members at the top
  2. Away/Idle members next
  3. Busy members below
  4. Offline members at the bottom
Members who have their presence set to “Nobody” will appear in the Offline group even if they’re actively online. This is intentional, they’ve chosen to be invisible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Read receipts in DMs are based on the message being opened, not your status. If you read a DM while invisible, the read receipt may still show. Your status dot will still show as offline.
Busy mode reduces notification prominence, you won’t get audio alerts. But messages still arrive and you’ll see unread indicators. It’s a softer version of going invisible.
Not currently, statuses are persistent until you change them. If you set a custom status while traveling, remember to clear it when you’re back.
Bot accounts and service accounts don’t have a standard presence system. They typically appear offline in member lists.
