Tavrn Glossary
New to platforms like this? Here’s a quick reference for all the terms you’ll run into. No jargon, just plain explanations.A–C
AHA ProgramTavrn’s official verification system for high-quality public rooms. AHA Verified rooms have a badge and appear in room discovery. Think of it like a “verified” checkmark for communities. Admin
A room role with elevated permissions — admins can manage channels, kick/ban members, and adjust room settings. The room owner can assign admin roles. Avatar
Your profile picture. Shows up next to your messages and on your profile. Can be any image (Cocoa members can use animated GIFs). Away
A status that shows you’re not actively using Tavrn right now. You might be AFK, your computer might be idle, or you manually set it. Ban
When a room admin permanently removes someone from a room. Banned members can’t rejoin. Different from a kick (which is temporary). Banner
The colored strip at the top of your profile card. You can customize it with any hex color. Bio
A short description on your profile. Tells people who you are, what you’re into, etc. Bot
An automated account that can perform actions in rooms (posting updates, moderation tasks, etc.). Busy
A status indicating you’d prefer not to be interrupted. Like a “Do Not Disturb” mode. Channel
A dedicated space inside a room for conversations. Channels can be text (for typing), voice (for talking), or announcement-type (for important updates). Each channel usually has a specific topic or purpose. Category
A folder that groups channels together inside a room. Example: a room might have a “GAMING” category containing
#fortnite, #minecraft, and #general-gaming.
CocoaTavrn’s optional premium membership. Adds cosmetic perks and quality-of-life upgrades without locking away core features. Monthly or yearly plans available.
D–H
DeafenMuting your incoming audio during a voice call — you can’t hear anyone, and they can see that you’re deafened. Different from mute (which only silences your microphone outgoing). DM (Direct Message)
A private, 1-on-1 conversation between you and one other person. Not visible to anyone else. Display Name
The name that shows up next to your messages. Can be anything you want. Different from your username (which is your unique identifier). Emoji Reactions
Small emoji you can add to any message as a quick reaction. Multiple people can add the same reaction and the count shows up. Feature Flag
An internal mechanism used by Tavrn to gradually roll out new features. You might see some features before others, or have access to beta features before they’re widely available. Friend Request
An invitation to connect with someone on Tavrn. The other person can accept or decline. Friendships are mutual. GIF
An animated image format. Tavrn has a built-in GIF picker powered by NovaGPI so you can search and send GIFs in any chat. Guild
Not a term Tavrn uses — if you heard this from Discord, the equivalent on Tavrn is a Room.
I–M
InviteA link or code that allows someone to join a room. Room owners and admins can create invite links and share them. Invite Code
A short alphanumeric code that functions as an invite. Can be entered manually in the “Join Room” dialog. Kick
Removing someone from a room without banning them. They can rejoin if they have a valid invite link. Used for lighter-touch moderation. Link Preview
When you paste a URL into a message, Tavrn automatically fetches a preview card showing the page’s title, description, and image. Lightbox
The fullscreen image viewer that opens when you click on a photo in chat. Navigate between images with arrow keys. Member
The default role when you join a room. Has standard permissions — can read and send messages, join voice channels, etc. Mention
Tagging someone in a message using
@username. They’ll get a notification. You can also mention @everyone to alert all members of a channel (if you have permission).
ModeratorA room role with moderation permissions — can kick members, delete messages, manage reports, etc. Sits between Member and Admin in the hierarchy. MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication)
An extra security layer for your account. After entering your password, you also enter a code from an authenticator app. Makes it much harder for someone to break into your account. Mini Profile
The small popup that appears when you click on someone’s username or avatar in chat. Shows their name, status, bio, and quick action buttons.
N–P
NotificationAn alert about something that happened — a new message, a friend request, a mention, etc. Shows up in the bell icon and can also be sent as a push notification to your browser or phone. OneSignal
The push notification service Tavrn uses under the hood to send notifications to your device. Owner
The person who created a room. Has all permissions and is the only one who can delete the room or transfer ownership. Pinned Message
A message that has been “pinned” to a channel for easy reference. Pinned messages can be viewed anytime by clicking the pin icon in the channel header. Presence
Your visible status — whether you appear online, away, busy, or offline to others. You can control who sees your presence in Settings → Privacy & Safety. Profile
Your public identity on Tavrn. Includes your avatar, display name, username, bio, pronouns, banner color, and social links. Pronouns
A field on your profile where you can share your preferred pronouns. Displayed publicly so others know how to address you.
Q–Z
QR CodeUsed in Tavrn’s Security & 2FA settings when setting up two-factor authentication. You scan it with your authenticator app to link it to your account. Not a profile-sharing feature. Reactions — see Emoji Reactions Report
A formal flag you can submit when someone violates Tavrn’s community standards. Reports are reviewed by the Tavrn team. Role
A label assigned to room members that determines their permissions. Standard roles in order of power: Owner → Admin → Moderator → Member. Screen Share
Sharing your screen during a voice/video call so others can see what’s on your display. Available in both DM calls and room voice channels. Room
A community space on Tavrn with its own channels, members, and settings. You can join many rooms and switch between them from the sidebar. Status
A short indicator of what you’re up to. Can be a preset (Online, Away, Busy, Offline) or a custom message (like “Working on a project 🛠️”). Thread — Tavrn uses direct replies/quotes in channels rather than dedicated thread views. Username
Your unique identifier on Tavrn. Used for
@mentions and to find you in search. Different from your display name.
Voice ChannelA channel in a room that you join to talk out loud (and optionally use video or share your screen). Voice channels show who’s currently in them. Webhook
A way for external services to send messages into a Tavrn room channel automatically. Used by room admins to integrate tools like bots or notification services.
