Your First Week on Tavrn

You’ve got an account, your profile looks great, and you’ve poked around the interface. What now? Here’s a friendly guide to making the most of your first week.

Day 1: Get Oriented

The first thing to do is just get comfortable with the layout. Don’t rush, Tavrn is supposed to feel warm and easy, not overwhelming.
1

Finish your profile

Add an avatar if you haven’t. Write a short bio. Pick a banner color. These small things make you feel more “real” to other people. Setting Up Your Profile →
2

Set your status

Click the dot next to your name in the bottom-left corner and pick a status. “Online” is fine, just having it set makes you feel present.
3

Add a friend or two

If you know anyone already on Tavrn, find them and send a friend request. Adding Friends →

Day 2–3: Find Your Communities

1

Join at least one room

Browse the discovery page or click an invite link from a friend. Even if you just lurk at first, being in a community gives Tavrn context and life. Finding & Joining Rooms →
2

Introduce yourself

Most rooms have an #introductions channel. Drop a quick hello, it goes a long way.
3

Explore the channels

Take five minutes to read through the channel list of any room you join. There’s usually more going on than just #general.

Day 4–5: Start Participating

1

Send a message in a channel

It sounds obvious, but a lot of people lurk for too long. Just say hi or reply to an existing conversation.
2

React to something

If someone says something you like, react to it with an emoji. It’s low-effort acknowledgment that still makes people feel seen.
3

Try a voice channel

If a room has a voice channel with people in it, pop in and say hi. Even a short visit can turn into a fun conversation.

Day 6–7: Make It Yours

1

Set a custom status

Express what you’re up to right now. Playing a game? Working? Just vibing? Your custom status shows on your profile and in friend lists. Custom Status →
2

Check your notification settings

By default, Tavrn will notify you for most things. If that feels like too much, dial it back in Settings → Notifications. Notification Settings →
3

Review your privacy settings

Five minutes here can save you a lot of headaches later. Decide who can see your profile, who can DM you, and how visible your activity is. Privacy Settings →

Things First-Timers Often Miss

These are the features that tend to fly under the radar for new users, but are genuinely useful once you know about them.
You can react to any message with an emoji, hover over a message and click the 😊 icon. Great for quick acknowledgment without sending a full reply.
Hover over a message and click the reply icon to quote-reply to it. The person you’re replying to will get a notification, and your message will be visually linked to theirs.
The message toolbar has a GIF button, click it to search NovaGPI and send the perfect reaction GIF. It’s very good.
In any channel, important messages can be pinned for easy reference. Look for the pin icon in the channel header.
You can run more than one Tavrn account and switch between them instantly, handy if you want a personal account and a community-facing one.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using your display name as your username, Pick a simple, consistent username. Your display name is where you get to be creative.
  • Ignoring the privacy settings, Default settings are reasonable, but take a look. You might want more control than you realize.
  • Only joining huge rooms, Smaller, more specific communities often have much better conversation and a tighter-knit vibe.
  • Not setting any status, Having no status set can make you feel invisible. Even “online” is better than nothing.

Need Help?

The Tavrn community is generally very welcoming. If you’re stuck on something, there’s a good chance someone in a room can help, or you can dig around this help center. Good luck out there. 🔥
