Voice Calls 101

One of the best things about Tavrn is how easy it is to hop on a call. Here’s everything you need to know about voice calls.

Two Types of Voice on Tavrn

📞 DM Calls

1-on-1 voice or video calls with a specific friend. You initiate it from a DM conversation.

🔊 Room Voice Channels

Group hangout spaces inside a room. Anyone in the room can drop in and out freely.
Both work on the same underlying technology, Cloudflare’s real-time infrastructure, and both support voice, video, and screen sharing.

Starting a DM Call

1

Open a DM conversation

Head to your DMs and click on the friend you want to call.
2

Click the call button

Look for the 📞 phone icon at the top-right of the conversation. Click it to start a voice call.
3

Wait for them to answer

Your friend will receive an incoming call notification with an audio cue. They can accept or decline.
4

You're connected!

Once they accept, the call connects and your voices come through in real time.

Joining a Room Voice Channel

Voice channels in rooms work differently from calls, they’re always open, and you just walk in.
1

Find a voice channel in the channel list

Voice channels have a 🔊 icon. You can see who’s already in a voice channel before joining.
2

Click the channel name to join

You’ll be instantly connected. No ringing, no waiting, just join.
3

Talk!

Your microphone is active by default. Mute yourself with the mute button in the call bar if you need to.

Receiving a Call

When someone calls you in a DM:
  • You’ll hear an audio notification (an incoming call sound)
  • A pop-up toast notification appears with the caller’s name and avatar
  • You can Accept or Decline from the notification
If you’re currently in another call, you’ll still see the incoming call notification, you can choose to switch or decline.

The Active Call Bar

Once you’re in a call, a persistent Active Call Bar appears at the bottom of the screen. This stays visible as you navigate around Tavrn, you’ll always be able to see your call status and control it. From the call bar, you can:
  • Mute/unmute your microphone
  • Enable/disable your camera
  • Share your screen
  • Hang up the call
  • Open the full call view to see video, participants, etc.

Leaving a Call

To end a DM call: Click the red hang-up button in the call bar or the call overlay. To leave a room voice channel: Click the disconnect button (usually a ✕ or a leave icon) in the call bar. Other people in the channel will remain, you’re just stepping out.

Call Duration

For DM calls, Tavrn tracks the duration so you can see how long you talked. This shows up in the DM conversation.

Call Quality

Tavrn’s voice technology uses Cloudflare’s edge infrastructure, meaning your audio and video are routed through rooms geographically close to you. This keeps latency low and quality high. If you’re experiencing call quality issues, see Troubleshooting Calls.
