Sending Messages

Messaging is at the heart of Tavrn. Whether you’re talking one-on-one with a friend or chatting in a busy room channel, this is how it all works.

Starting a DM

  1. Click Friends in the sidebar
  2. Click anyone’s name
  3. Select Message — this opens or creates a DM conversation

The Message Input

The message box sits at the bottom of every chat window. Type your message and hit Enter to send. That’s it. A few things to know about the input:
  • Enter sends the message
  • Shift + Enter adds a new line (for multi-paragraph messages)
  • Drag and drop files onto the input to attach them
  • The toolbar above the input has quick access to attachments, GIFs, and emoji

Message Formatting

Tavrn supports Markdown formatting in messages, so you can style your text without any menus.
FormatSyntaxResult
Bold**text**text
Italic*text*text
Strikethrough~~text~~text
Inline code`code`code
Code block```code```Syntax-highlighted code block
Quote> textBlockquote
Header# HeadingLarge heading
List- itemBullet list
Code blocks on Tavrn support syntax highlighting — if you specify the language after the opening backticks (like ```python), the code will be color-coded appropriately.

Editing & Deleting Your Messages

Made a typo? No problem. To edit a message:
  • Hover over the message and click the edit (pencil) icon
  • Or press the up arrow key to quickly edit your most recent message
  • Make your changes and hit Enter to save
To delete a message:
  • Hover over the message and click the delete icon
  • Confirm the deletion
Edited messages show a small “(edited)” timestamp so others know the message was changed. Deleted messages disappear completely from the conversation.

Just paste a URL into the message and send it — Tavrn will automatically generate a link preview card below your message, showing the page title, description, and image. If you paste a link to another Tavrn room invite, you’ll get a special room invite card showing the room’s info with a “Join Room” button.
Tavrn checks links against safe browsing databases. If you click a link flagged as potentially dangerous, a warning popup will appear before you’re redirected. Pay attention to those warnings.

@Mentioning People

Type @ followed by someone’s username to mention them in a message. They’ll receive a notification.
  • In a DM: the other person is always notified anyway
  • In a room channel: only the person you mention gets a dedicated notification — not the whole channel
Room admins can also mention @everyone to notify all members of a channel. This is typically reserved for important announcements.

Message Timestamps

Messages show a timestamp when you hover over them. Consecutive messages from the same person within a short window are grouped together to keep things clean.

Read Receipts in DMs

In 1-on-1 DM conversations, a small indicator shows when your message has been read by the other person. It’s subtle but useful — you’ll know if they’ve seen it.

Long Messages

There’s no strict character limit for messages on Tavrn. Go ahead and write that essay. That said, for really long content, consider using a code block, quotes, or just keeping it conversational.
