Roles & Permissions

Roles are how room owners manage who can do what inside their community. Understanding the role system helps you both as a member and as a room owner.

The Default Role Hierarchy

Tavrn rooms have five built-in roles, from most powerful to least:

👑 Owner

The room creator. Has complete control over every aspect of the room, settings, channels, members, moderation, and more. Can delete the room. There is only ever one owner per room.

🛡️ Admin

Trusted leaders. Admins can manage most things, channels, categories, invite links, room settings, roles (below admin), and member management (kick, ban). Can’t delete the room or modify other admins.

⚔️ Moderator

Community keepers. Moderators can kick members and delete messages. Can’t change room settings or manage channels.

🤖 TavBot

The automated assistant. TavBot is Tavrn’s built-in moderation bot, it has its own role in the member list. Room admins control what TavBot does via the Moderation tab in room settings.

🧑 Member

The default role. Can read and send messages in accessible channels, join voice channels, react to messages, and participate normally. Can’t change anything about the room itself.

Assigning Roles

Only Admins and the Owner can assign roles to other members.
1

Open Room Settings → Members

Navigate to your room settings and find the Members list.
2

Click on a member

Find the member you want to update and click their name.
3

Change their role

Select the new role from the dropdown.
4

Save

Changes take effect immediately.
You can only assign roles at or below your own level. An Admin can make someone a Moderator, but not another Admin. Only the Owner can promote someone to Admin.

Kicking vs. Banning

Kick, Removes the member from the room. They can rejoin if they have a valid invite link. Use this for lighter situations or first offenses. Ban, Permanently removes the member and prevents them from rejoining via invite. Use this for serious or repeated violations. Both actions are logged and visible to admins.

Tips for Room Owners

Keep the admin team small and trusted. More admins doesn’t mean better moderation, it often means more potential for accidental misuse. Start with 1-2 trusted admins and expand if the room grows to need it.
Yes, for larger rooms. Mods handle the day-to-day (deleting messages, cooling off heated conversations, welcoming members). Admins handle the structure (channels, settings, escalated bans). This division keeps things running smoothly.
As owner or admin, you can revoke moderator status at any time. Remove the role in Room Settings → Members.
Currently, Tavrn uses the four standard roles. Custom role creation is a commonly requested feature, stay tuned.

As a Regular Member: Understanding Your Permissions

If you’re a new member of a room and something isn’t available to you (you can’t see a channel, can’t send messages in a specific place, etc.), it’s usually because:
  1. You don’t have the right role yet, Ask an admin if this is intentional and if there’s a way to get elevated access.
  2. The channel is restricted, Some channels are only for certain roles (mods-only, announcements, etc.).
  3. You haven’t been verified, Some rooms require new members to agree to rules before getting full access.
If you join a room and can barely see any channels, look for a #verify or #welcome channel. Many rooms require new members to agree to rules before unlocking the full community.
