Replying & Quoting

In busy chats, knowing which message you’re responding to matters. Tavrn’s reply feature lets you quote a specific message so the context is always clear.

How to Reply to a Message

1

Hover over the message you want to reply to

On desktop, hover over any message to reveal the action icons.
2

Click the reply icon

It looks like a curved arrow (↩). Click it to start a quoted reply.
3

See the preview

A small preview of the message you’re replying to appears above your input box, this is the quote that will appear with your reply.
4

Type your reply and send

Write your message and hit Enter. Your reply is sent with the quote attached.
On mobile: Long-press a message to bring up the action menu, then tap Reply.

What a Reply Looks Like

When you reply to a message, your message appears with a small quote block above it showing:
  • A snippet of the original message
  • The name of the person who sent it
  • A link to jump up to the original (if it’s far up in the history)
This keeps conversations coherent even when a lot is happening at once, everyone can tell what’s being responded to.

Jumping to the Original Message

If you receive a reply and want to see the original message in context, click the quote block. Tavrn will scroll up to the original message and briefly highlight it. This works even if the original message is far back in the history.

Canceling a Reply

If you hover over a message, click reply by accident, and don’t actually want to reply, just hit Esc or click the on the reply preview above the input box. You’ll be back to composing a normal message.

When to Use Replies vs. Just Typing

Here’s a rough guide:
SituationUse
Responding to the most recent messageJust type, context is obvious
Responding to a message from a few messages agoReply, makes the context clear
Having a back-and-forth conversationReplies help, but you can also just talk normally
A busy room channel with lots of simultaneous conversationsDefinitely reply, it’s how people follow threads
Answering a specific question from earlierReply, especially if others have since sent messages

Replies & Notifications

When you reply to someone’s message, they receive a notification about your reply, even if they weren’t actively watching the conversation. This makes replies useful for getting someone’s attention on a specific comment.
In DMs, the other person is already notified of all messages. The reply notification is most impactful in busy room channels where someone might miss things.

Tips for Keeping Conversations Clean

In a room channel where multiple conversations are happening simultaneously, using replies threads each conversation visually. It makes the channel much easier to follow.
When you’re quoting someone to express agreement or react to something specific, consider whether a reaction emoji might be more elegant than a full reply. Both are valid, it’s about what fits the moment.
