After Creation: Your Default Setup

When you create a room, Tavrn sets you up with some basic defaults:
  • A #general text channel
  • A General Voice channel
  • You’re automatically set as the Owner
From here, it’s all yours to customize.

Setting Up Your Room

Once your room is created, here’s what to do next:

1. Create Your Channels

Think about what conversations you want to have and create channels for them. A few tips:
  • Start small, You don’t need 30 channels on day one. A few well-named channels are better than a maze of specific ones.
  • Add categories, Group related channels with category headers
  • Create a #rules or #welcome channel, Helps onboard new members
To create a channel:
  1. Hover over a category header (or the channel list) and click the + icon
  2. Choose Text Channel or Voice Channel
  3. Name it and confirm
Channel names can only use lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens. No spaces, use hyphens instead: #game-night, not #Game Night.

2. Invite Your First Members

Share your room invite link with the people you want to join. To get your invite link:
  1. Open Room Settings
  2. Go to Invites
  3. Create or copy an invite link
Invite links can be set to expire after a certain number of uses or time period.
For more on invites, see Inviting Members.

3. Customize Your Icon & Banner

A recognizable room icon goes a long way. Upload something that represents the vibe of your community, a logo, an illustration, a meme, whatever fits.

Room Visibility Settings

You control whether your room is public or private:
  • Private (default), Only people with an invite link can join
  • Public, Your room can be discovered through Tavrn’s room browser
To change this, go to Room Settings → Overview and adjust the visibility setting.
Think carefully before making your room public. Once you do, random people can find and join it. Make sure your rules and moderation setup are ready.

Organizing Channels with Categories

Categories are the collapsible folders that group your channels. Here’s how to create one:
  1. Click the + next to “Categories” in your channel management settings (or right-click in the channel list)
  2. Name the category
  3. Drag channels into it
Example categories for a gaming room: WELCOME, GENERAL, GAMES, VOICE, BOT COMMANDS

Room Limits

  • You can create multiple rooms, no hard limit
  • Each room can have many channels and categories
  • Channel positions can be manually reordered by dragging

Growing Your Community

Starting a room is the easy part, here are a few ideas for getting it going:
  • Invite your existing friends first, Build a core group before going public
  • Post in related communities, If there’s a related subreddit, Discord, or community, let them know Tavrn exists
  • Apply for AHA verification, Once your room is established, AHA verification can boost your visibility. AHA Verified Rooms →
  • Be active yourself, Nothing kills a community faster than an absent owner. Show up, start conversations, welcome new members.

Transferring or Deleting a Room

To transfer ownership to another member:
  • Room Settings → Members → Click a member → Transfer Ownership

  • Room Settings → Danger Zone → Delete Room
