Adding Your First Friends

Tavrn is way more fun when you’ve got people to hang out with. Here’s how to find friends and get your social circle going.

How the Friend System Works

Friendships on Tavrn are mutual, you send a request, the other person accepts it, and you’re friends. It’s a two-way relationship. Once you’re friends with someone, you can:
  • Start a direct message conversation anytime
  • See their online/offline status
  • View their full profile (depending on their privacy settings)
  • Initiate voice or video calls

Finding People to Add

The quickest way to add someone you already know.
1

Go to the Friends section

Click Friends in the sidebar.
2

Click 'Add Friend'

This opens the user search.
3

Type their username

Search by @username. You need the exact username, it’s case-insensitive but needs to be accurate.
4

Send the request

When their profile appears, click Add Friend. They’ll get a notification and can accept or decline.

Managing Friend Requests

All your pending friend requests live in the Friends section of the sidebar, under the Pending tab. From there you can:
  • Accept a request to become friends
  • Decline a request (they won’t be notified)
  • See your outgoing requests to check if someone’s accepted yours yet
The person whose request you decline won’t receive a notification saying “your request was declined.” It just silently doesn’t go through from their perspective.

Removing a Friend

People grow apart, it happens. To remove someone from your friends list:
  1. Open the Friends section
  2. Find their name in the list
  3. Right-click (or tap and hold on mobile) → Remove Friend
Removed friends won’t be notified. You’ll no longer see each other’s status, and you’ll need to send a new friend request if you want to reconnect.

Blocking Someone

Blocking is more powerful than removing. When you block someone:
  • They can’t send you friend requests
  • They can’t message you
  • You won’t see each other’s activity
To block someone: click their profile → Block User.
For a full breakdown of blocking and its effects, see Blocking Someone.

Privacy: Who Can Send You Friend Requests?

By default, anyone on Tavrn can send you a friend request. But you can change this. In Settings → Privacy & Safety, you can set friend request permissions to:
  • Everyone (default)
  • Friends of friends, Only people who share mutual friends with you
  • Nobody, Lock it down completely
This is useful if you’re a public figure or just prefer a more curated friends list.

The Tavrn Welcome Bot

When you first sign up, you’ll automatically be friended by the Tavrn account, that’s us! It’s how we send you tips, announcements, and the occasional update about new features. You can mute or leave that conversation anytime without it affecting anything.

Your Friends List

Once you’ve got some friends, they’ll all show up in the Friends section, sorted by online status. You can see at a glance who’s online, who’s away, and who’s offline. Click anyone’s name to:
  • Open a DM
  • See their profile
  • Start a call
Friends with a 🟢 green dot are online. 🟡 Yellow means away or idle. 🔴 Red means busy (do not disturb). ⚫ Grey means offline or invisible.
